About Lucky Nomads

We built a decision engine because the alternatives were not good enough.

Lucky Nomads is a data and analytics platform for globally mobile professionals - built on the principle that geographic decisions deserve the same analytical rigour as any other major strategic choice. Today the platform runs on two layers: the GeoCompass engine that structures the decision, and an advisory layer that scopes and runs the move.

Why place matters

The right country is not where you escape to. It is where you become who you are.

Nietzsche spent his life moving between the Alps in summer and the Mediterranean in winter. Not out of restlessness, but because his work depended on it. He argued, in Ecce Homo, that a wrong choice of place and climate could keep a person from their life's task entirely, to the point of never even seeing it. He was, in a very concrete sense, a philosopher of place.

Most people never get to choose their ground. They inherit it. The few who can choose rarely do it deliberately.

That is the gap Lucky Nomads was built to close: to treat the choice of where you live with the seriousness it actually carries. The place does not just house you. It lets you become who you are, or quietly prevents it.

Most geographic decisions are made without a framework.

Over years of observing the international mobility landscape, a consistent pattern emerged: professionals making significant geographic decisions - where to base their life, how to structure their international operations, how to optimize their fiscal and operational position - were doing so on the basis of incomplete, unstructured information.

The available resources ranged from anecdotal blog posts to YouTube influencers with undisclosed biases to expensive relocation consultants with limited jurisdictional coverage.

What was missing was a structured analytical system - something that could process the full complexity of a geographic decision across multiple simultaneous dimensions, and produce an output calibrated to the individual's specific situation.

That is what GeoCompass was built to be.

Who built GeoCompass

GeoCompass was built by a finance professional trained in wealth advisory, applying institutional-grade analytical frameworks to jurisdiction selection.

Lucky Maillard built GeoCompass by applying the same structured analytical approach used in wealth advisory to the problem of jurisdiction selection.

He holds a Master's degree in wealth management, banking, and insurance.

His professional background is in wealth advisory: analyzing financial situations, structuring assets, and identifying optimization levers across tax, investment, and capital dimensions. That analytical framework is the foundation of the GeoCompass engine.

Geographic decisions are financial decisions. Where you live determines your tax exposure, your banking access, and your operational friction. GeoCompass applies the same structured analytical approach that wealth advisors use to optimize a financial position - to the problem of jurisdiction selection.

He has personally experienced 19 of the jurisdictions in the engine - with stays ranging from short visits to multi-month residencies - and built this tool because none of the existing resources structured the decision with sufficient analytical depth.

The engine's scoring methodology is documented on the /methodology page. The jurisdictional data combines curated proprietary research with structured external sources across the 24 dimensions relevant to internationally mobile professionals.

In their words

What clients and colleagues say about Lucky.

Before Lucky Nomads, Lucky advised private clients in France as a licensed wealth management professional. That practice holds a 4.9/5 rating across 17 Google reviews. The quotes below are translated from French, with last names shortened for privacy.

To be clear about what this is: these reviews concern his prior regulated advisory practice in France, not GeoCompass. They are shown as a track record of how he works with the people who trust him with financial decisions.

Finances were my weak spot, the perfect subject to put me to sleep. My first meeting with Lucky was a revelation. He explains things so well that for the first time in 49 years I actually wanted to learn more. Fair explanations, fair pricing.

What Lucky Nomads is

An engine to decide, and an advisory layer to run it.

GeoCompass gives you the structured information you need to decide for yourself, with full transparency about the trade-offs involved. It does not tell you what to do. It tells you what fits.

When you want a human to take it further, Lucky Nomads Advisory picks up where the engine stops. We scope your move in a written Decision Brief, then, if you want the execution handled for you, we run it as the general contractor of your relocation. We do not replace your lawyer, your tax adviser, or your accountant - we select licensed professionals verified against their official registers, brief them, sequence their work, and you pay them directly at their net rate.

The two layers share one spine: every advisory engagement starts from your GeoCompass diagnostic, so the human work always rests on structured, auditable data rather than intuition.

The engine, self-serve

  • Structured multi-factor analysis
  • Personalized jurisdiction ranking
  • Trade-off mapping
  • Decision framework

The advisory layer, human

  • Decision Brief, your plan in writing
  • Relocation Sprint, execution orchestrated
  • Licensed professionals, verified per registers
  • Annual Review, your file kept current

What we never do ourselves: provide formal legal, tax, or financial advice. Those acts are performed by the licensed professionals we orchestrate and you pay directly. See the full ladder, prices, and process on the advisory page.

Vision, mission, values

No single country is the answer. Several are.

The perfect place does not exist. Every jurisdiction is a set of trade-offs, and the search for the one country that has everything is exactly what keeps people stuck in the wrong one.

A life worth living is assembled, not found: a main base that fits, anchors you explore from, and options held in reserve. That is what a jurisdiction portfolio is, and it is why the engine ranks several countries rather than crowning one.

The world contains nearly 200 sovereign states plus dozens of autonomous territories, dependencies, and special jurisdictions. GeoCompass evaluates 232 of them as distinct decision environments, each with radically different fiscal, operational, and lifestyle parameters. That diversity is not a problem to be solved. It is the raw material of the portfolio.

Our mission

To let people build an international life that is free, deliberate, and their own.

Free in where they can go. Rigorous in how they choose. Never dependent on anyone's commission.

Our values

Freedom

The right to choose where your life happens, and to change your mind later.

Reason

Decisions made on evidence, not on anecdote, ideology, or someone else's commission.

Optionality

Never be trapped by a single passport, a single tax residence, or a single plan. Options are the only real hedge against a world that keeps changing.

Operating principles

How those beliefs translate into the way we actually work.

Place as a first decision

Where you live is not settled after everything else. It sets the ceiling on the rest. We treat it as one of the most consequential choices a person makes, and we give it the analysis it deserves.

Structure over intuition

Geographic decisions should rely on structured analysis rather than instinct or anecdotes.

Compatibility over popularity

The best jurisdiction is not the most famous one, but the one structurally compatible with your situation.

Trade-offs over illusions

Every jurisdiction involves compromises, and good decisions come from understanding them clearly.

Neutrality over referral fees

The advisory layer is paid by you alone, so the professionals we pick are the right ones, not the ones who pay us.

Constraints before preferences

Structural constraints are evaluated before lifestyle preferences.

Start with the data. Bring in a human when you want one.
