How visa access works

The result you get falls into one of these categories.

Free movement
You can enter, live, and work without a visa under a free-movement framework such as the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. Long stays may still require local registration or residence formalities.
Visa-free
You can enter without applying for a visa in advance, usually for tourism, transit, or limited business that is not paid locally, up to a set number of days per stay.
Visa on arrival
You do not apply for the visa before you travel. It is issued when you arrive at an eligible port of entry, such as an airport, land border, or seaport, subject to eligibility, documents, and a fee.
Electronic travel authorization (ETA)
A quick online approval tied to your passport that you obtain before departure, like the US ESTA or Canada eTA. It is not a visa and does not by itself guarantee entry.
e-Visa
A visa you apply for and receive online before you travel, rather than at an embassy.
Visa required
You need to apply for a visa in advance, typically at an embassy or consulate, before you can enter.
Entry restricted
Entry is currently not permitted for this passport on standard tourist or business terms.

Visa checker FAQ

How does the visa checker work?

Pick your nationality and your destination. The checker returns whether you can travel visa-free, need a visa on arrival, an ETA, an e-visa, or a visa applied for in advance, along with how many days you can usually stay per visit.

What does visa-free mean?

Visa-free means you can enter for tourism and certain permitted short business activities without applying for a visa beforehand, up to the maximum stay set by the destination. It does not usually grant the right to work, study long term, or live there.

What is the difference between an e-visa, an ETA, and a visa on arrival?

An ETA is a fast online travel authorization linked to your passport that you get before departure. It is not a visa, and it does not by itself guarantee entry. An e-visa is a full visa you apply for online ahead of time. A visa on arrival is issued when you arrive at an eligible port of entry, often for a fee. All three differ from a traditional visa that you apply for at an embassy.

How many days can I stay without a visa?

It depends on the passport and the destination. The checker shows the maximum stay per visit when that figure is known. Allowances are often counted over a rolling period, such as 90 days within any 180 days for the Schengen area.

I have more than one passport. Which one should I use?

Add each of your passports and the checker shows the result for every one, then highlights which passport gives you the strongest access to that destination. You can compare up to three nationalities at a time.

Should I rely on this before booking travel?

Use it to understand your options and compare passports. Visa rules can change, so confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or official immigration website before you book or travel.
